Petrie is in the North Pine River section of its local government area 24 kilometres north of Brisbane City. The southern boundary is marked by the North Pine River.

Petrie is a suburban village with housing developments on land which was previously used for pine plantations and agriculture. Petrie railway station provides access to regular Queensland Rail City network services to Brisbane and Ipswich, as well as Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast.

The Gympie Road, Dayboro Road and Anzac Avenue roundabout junction and surrounding area encompass the town centre which includes retail, commerce and mechanical industries.

The origin of the suburb name is from an early inhabitant by the name of Tom Petrie. The township was named Petrie after his death. Prior to this, the area was known as North Pine. Tom Petrie was a highly regarded individual in the area through his community work.

Buyers have discovered this lovely leafy suburb with its wonderful parks and reserves, the occasional cow or horse in a paddock and an abundance of flora and fauna.
Petrie has been identified as a "Hot Spot" area in the Moreton Bay Region due to its easy access to the railway station and proximity to the North Lakes and Strathpine Shopping Precincts. The area is witnessing positive price growth which will continue as first home buyers and investors identify all of the positives that Petrie offers both now and into the future and in particular once the University is completed in 2021.

Residents in a small suburb north of Brisbane are holding on to their homes ahead of a potential boom in the property market. Petrie is on the verge of a major transformation with the University of The Sunshine Coast set to open a campus on the site of the former paper mill by 2020. It will initially be home to some 10,000 students and by 2030 that number will balloon to 20,000 plus lecturers and administration. To ensure the project's viability, the Federal Government has loaned $100 million to the university to kick-start construction in addition to a $35 million grant from the Moreton Bay Regional Council for infrastructure. The financial assistance has reassured businesses and locals that the project is very much alive and Petrie is about to awaken and be given an overdue identity, says Pine Rivers Chamber of Commerce treasurer, Craig Pratt.
